The Salar de Tara is located at an altitude of over 4,000 meters in the Los Flamencos National Reserve, very close to the tripartite border between Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. This place has a rich biosystem that houses numerous flora and fauna, being a good destination for hiking and photography.
In the Salar de Tara it is possible to find a large number of flamingos, which take refuge there during the nesting season, as well as vicuñas, culpeo foxes, puna guinea pigs, chululos, caitíes, Andean gulls, puna plovers, jergón ducks and guallata geese. Regarding its flora, it is formed by bofedales, yellow straw, coirón, tola de agua and tola amaia, which can be seen on the slopes of the hills and the altiplano.
Its main geographical attractions are the Monjes de Pacana, which are gigantic vertical stones that have been shaped by wind erosion to imitate the silhouette of monks. They are located in the plain near the Salar de Aguas Calientes. There are also the Cathedrals of Ashes, formed precisely by the ashes thrown by the Llaima Volcano thousands of years ago during one of its eruptions. Over time they have acquired circular shapes (spiral type) due to the erosive forces of the desert.
